TIBET

................................................................................................................................

Tibet is a dream adventure destination for the people living in the western world.

Sprawled over vast landscapes of 1.2 million sq. km at an average altitude of 3000m, from the verdant forests to the arid dry moonscapes, huddled in the rain-shadow behind the mass range of the northern Himalaya, Tibet is a mysterious land which has retained the feeling of the medieval era and a tinge of Shangri-La

Places To See In Tibet

places to see in tibet

Lhasa

Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, is situated on the north bank of the Kyichu river in the province of U (Central Tibet). The Chinese consider it to be the regional capital of the Tibetan Autonomous Region (TAR). The Lhasa region may be reached by air from Chengdu (Sichuan, West China) and Kathmandu, or overland from Golmud (Northwest China) and Kathmandu. Lhasa is the best place to explore the monasteries and palaces once occupied by religious heads of Tibet.

Sera Monastery

Sera lies about five kilometers (three miles) to the north of Lhasa along the base of the mountains at the edge of the valley. It can be reached by bus from the bus station near the Mentsi Khang. You can also bicycle or walk. The colleges and chapels are open daily, with the usual long lunch break.

Shigatse & Tashilhunpo

Shigatse, the capital of Tsang province, is 395km (247 mile) west of Lhasa via Gyantse and 307km (192 mile) west of Lhasa via the metalled road along the Tsangpo. The daily bus service from Lhasa follows the latter route.

Samye Monastery

Samye, Tibet's first Buddhist monastery, is of unique significance in both the political and religious history of the land. Formerly on the old caravan route from the Yarlung Valley to Lhasa, its location on the north bank of the Tsangpo, surrounded by sand dunes and with no paved road, makes access difficult today.

Tsetang

Tsetang, the third largest town in Central Tibet, is 196km (122 mile) from Lhasa on the south bank of the Tsangpo river. The town is in the heartland of historical Tibet at the head of the Yarlung Valley and adjacent to the ancient capital of Nedong. Like Lhasa, Tsetang is a good base for making day trips to Samye, Yarlung, and Chonggye as well as sites farther east along the Tsangpo

Mt. Kailash Overland Tour

Mt. Kailash which stands prominently in a remote southwest corner of Tibet at the altitude of 22,028 feet is the holiest of the holy peaks. Believed to be the axis of the earth Mount Sumeru or Meru, Mt. Kailash is the abode of Lord Shiva and Kang Ringboche of Tibetan Buddhism. It has been described as compelling, dome-shaped peak, rising above a desolately beautiful 13,000 ft plateau or rainbow-colored rocks.

The journey to Mt. Kailash is an important pilgrimage for millions of Buddhists and Hindus, in addition to Jains and also to Bonpos. One circuit of the sacred Mt. Kailash (54 km/32 mile) is said to be sufficient to wipe out all the sins of your lifetime. Wiping out the sins of your lifetime is a much bigger task; that major sin clean up requires 108 revolutions. Bathing in the icy sapphire waters of Lake Manasarovar at the mountain’s base is believed to remove the sins of innumerable lifetimes.

Mt. Kailash Via Zhangmu

Mt. Kailash is (22,022ft) the ultimate pilgrimage site for both Buddhist and Hindu devotees. This mountain stands completely alone with no other peaks near it. Pilgrims travel to this remote area in far western Tibet to complete the circuit around the base of this sacred mountain (to do so is said to erase the sins of a lifetime) and to the holy Mansarover Lake. Four great rivers of Tibet, India and Nepal have their origins near Kailash, the Tibetans consider these rivers and their sources sacred.

From Kathmandu, we will drive through the lovely countryside of northern Nepal to the Nepali-Chinese border at Kodari. We cross the Friendship Bridge and drive into Tibet to Zhangmu and on to Nyalam in southern Tibet for a day of hiking and acclimatization. You will have your first experience of the vastness of the Tibetan Plateau as we travel north crossing the Brahmaputra River to Saga.

We will pass numerous nomadic encampments until finally we arrive in Darchen, the starting point for our 3 day circuit of Mt. Kailash trekking around the mountain.
